Hope all is well and that everyone survived the holidays. I figure by now, following Christmas break, everyone has their steer halter broke and has bathed them at least a dozen times. Don’t forget to start setting up your home visits. The home visit contact list should be found in the folder you received at selection. Now is the time to ask for help if you are needing any advise.
The first meeting of the new year will take place at Park Bowling Lanes in Heath. Time is from 2-4 pm on Sunday January 15, 2017. Kids are out of school the following day so having to do homework should not be an excuse for not being able to attend. Remember this counts as one of your 3 required meetings. It will be a fun 2 hours of unlimited bowling with 6 people per lane and 1 large pizza with pitcher of pop per lane is included. Cost is $10 per bowler which includes shoe rental. Bring a friend, brother, sister, or parents if you like and lets have some fun.
The selection day was very smooth again this year. We would like to give a big thanks to David Felumlee of Claylick Run Farms for allowing us to have the selection at his wonderful facility again this year. Would also like to thank Denny Ruff of Producers Livestock- Muskingum for putting the calves together. Y-Tex donated the ear tags again this year and a big thanks goes out to them.
A big thanks also goes out to Dr. Robert Kreuger for checking the steers before selection and giving the kids some advise for keeping them healthy.
Some of the kids were right to work following selection. Hailey Bush had her steer tamed down and named before she even left for home. Her steers name is “MOO”. Here she is with her steer following selection.
Here are some other pictures from selection day. Hope to see everyone on January 15, 2017.

Please inform anyone that you may know that is interested in having a steer project this next year. This is a great opportunity for our 4H Youth. Thanks to Farm Credit, the past 2 years they have offered the kids interest free loans for the purchase price of the steers. The kids only out of pocket cost is feed and supplies.
Steer and feed prices are lower than they have been for many years. This hopefully will give the kids an opportunity to make a nice profit and at the same time learn about what it takes to select, raise, care for, and show a market steer.
The 2016 Hartford Fair is now a memory but the its just the beginning of the next one. We would like to thank everyone that participated in this years steer pool show and encourage each of you to find someone to join the program with you for next year. The steer pool program was started in 1959 and is the only one in the state of its kind. The idea behind it was to take a steer project from beginning to end, and especially to give everyone a level playing field and to help the kids learn the aspects of raising and showing a market steer.
The carcass show for this years project will be held on August 18, 2016 @6:30pm. Location is aMAYSing Meats in Johnstown. Hope to see everyone there. As well as seeing how your steer graded other awards are also announced and distributed at this time.

The results for the Outstanding Exhibitor awards for 2015 Steer Pool were handed out at our meeting today at Heath Bowling Lanes. Outstanding Exhibitor Awards are calculated by a formula which takes into account your live placing, carcass placing, project book, showmanship, skillathon, etc. and there are 3 age groups. All 3 age groups final scores where extremely close. The junior category was separated by only 1/10th of a point, intermediate 10 points, and senior group 13 points.
